The Mintha Theater at a Glance

The Mintha Theater opened in 2006 with the mission of presenting authentic Burmese dance to international visitors in Mandalay. But changes in Myanmar's economy brought changes to the Mintha Theater as well. Fans of the Mintha Theater and its mission are working to relocate the theater and to save a valuable resource for the arts community of Mandalay.
2006
Artistic director U Ohn Maung teamed with community artists and teachers from the Pantra Art University to found a classical dance theater in a fixed location catering to visiting and local audiences.

2009
Mintha Theater moved to 27th street and built a new bamboo stage. The theater expanded its repertoire to include more than 15 dances from different eras and Myanmar ethnicities. Local professionals commended the theater for including apprentices in its nightly performances.

2010
Lonely Planet and Routard guidebooks recommended Mintha Theater. Marketing outreach to travel agencies helped to boost audience size. Trip Advisor posted 4.5 star reviews and rated the Mintha Theater one of the top attractions in Mandalay.

2012
Audiences and local fame grew as tourism expanded. In the face of new competing economic opportunities, public funding was cut dramatically for student stipends and teacher salaries in the traditional arts

2013
Booming tourism helped to increase audiences to 3,000 visitors a year. Ticket sales met day-to-day costs of operation. Myanmar Times called out the Mintha Theater as the only venue highlighting classical dance.

Mintha Theater was notified of non-renewal of its lease and began to look for a new location. Spiking rental costs threatened the theater.

Late 2013
Arts Mandalay Foundation was formed with the goals of:
  • Reopening the Mintha Theater
  • Opening an arts school to train the next generation
  • Undertaking projects to keep Burmese theater alive

October, 2015
Mintha Theater re-opened as adjunct to the Inwa School of Performing Arts, which opened in July, 2015
